What is the Wide Wonder Zero Stigma Pledge?

  • I pledge to avoid using stigmatizing words like "junkie," "drug abuser," and "addict" in public and professional conversations as well as when referring to loved ones who are drug users.

  • I pledge to continue learning about substance use disorder and mental illness so that I can replace myths and fear with truth and understanding.

  • I pledge to become part of the larger conversation to reduce the stigma associated with behavioral health.

Here are some other ways we get to deal with stigma:

  • Ask for help.

  • Say ‘no’ to self-doubt and shame.

  • Don’t isolate yourself.

  • Remember, you are not your illness.

  • Join a support group.

  • Speak out against stigma.

Others’ judgments almost always stem from a lack of understanding rather than information based on the facts. Learning to accept your condition and recognize what you need to do to treat it, seeking support, and helping educate others can make a big difference.
